Why Play an Instrument?

Band Elective

In 6th and 7th grade, students may be assigned to introductory or intermediate band as one of their two semester-long enrichment classes.  Eighth graders can request advanced band for their year-long enrichment class when they fill out the preference form at the end of 7th grade.  A scholastic band program with specific ensemble modifications unique to the characteristics of the daily, rigorous academic schedule of middle school, the classes follows national and state curriculum standards.

After-School Band

The after-school band rehearses on Tuesdays from 3:45-4:45pm in the JLMS band room, aka Mr. Reilly's classroom.  Come join in the fun, all instrumentalists are welcome!  A separate repertoire has been created for this group, with the introduction of jazz music as the main focus.  Time is spent on the tougher charts from the advanced band class as well.

The after-school band combines with student musicians from the advanced band class for various live performances, such as at the Noe Valley Farmers' Market, the Fall and Spring VAPA Showcases, the Latino Heritage Month and African American History Month Assemblies, and the SFUSD Arts Festival at the Asian Art Museum.  It also combines with the intermediate band class for the 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony.

Soul Society @ Big Night

Soul Society (featuring our own Mr. Brendan Reilly on bass) provided the music for the PTSA's "Big Night" fundraiser held on March 10, 2018, at JLMS parent-owned Sandbox Studios in the Dogpatch neighborhood.  A rockin' good time was had by all who attended!
