8th Grade World Language Placement Assessment

A requirement for high school graduation includes 20 credits of World Language, which equals two years or four semesters of study. Three years of world language study are recommended by most 4-year colleges (UC/CSU). If your child already speaks and can read some Spanish, he or she will have the opportunity to take a placement test this winter (test administration window 1/29/2018 to 2/2/2018.) The results of this assessment determines the correct placement into a high school world language class. Taking advanced language classes is a great way to help your child get into college and to earn the Seal of Biliteracy award on his or her high school diploma. As well, your child may be able to earn college credit in high school for taking an AP course or an advanced world language class at CCSF.  Please contact your child’s 8th grade counselor for more information.

San Francisco Unified School District officials are working closely with the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Public Health to monitor the air quality situation in San Francisco. At this time, we continue to advise schools to conduct indoor activities during the school day. Schools will be open Friday, Oct. 13. San Francisco has very poor air quality due to the fires in the North Bay. SFUSD has advised all school sites to keep students indoors on Oct. 12 during recess, physical education and lunch. All outdoor sports and learning activities should also be moved indoors.

These guidelines are to remain in place until the San Francisco Department of Public Health deems the air quality has improved and it is safe for children to do activities outdoors. We will continue to update principals regarding any changes.

Beginning at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 11, the air quality in San Francisco is expected to become "unhealthy for sensitive groups" (known as a code orange). At that time, schools have been advised to minimize outdoor exertion for students and staff with asthma or other health issues. Alternative activities and settings will be made available for all students at all of our schools.

To date, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrant youth have been granted DACA status, which provides work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. The program has enabled our graduates to contribute to their communities by significantly increasing opportunities for higher education and jobs. Unfortunately, on September 5, 2017, President Trump directed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to phase out and eventually end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) over two and half years. USCIS will continue to accept and process RENEWAL applications until Oct. 5, 2017 from applicants whose DACA expires between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018. Below are resources in support of DACA students who are eligible for renewal:

Greetings,

The 8th Grade Promotion will take place on Tuesday, May 23th and we are in need of donations in the form of cookies.

Traditionally, we ask that all 7th-grade families (we welcome 6th-grade parents as well)  purchase/make a box/batch of cookies for the 8th-grade reception.  This weekend is the perfect opportunity for you to add it to your shopping list.

Cookies can be dropped off in the Parent Room on Monday all day and Tuesday until 3 pm.  You can also bring them directly to Everett Middle School.

We could also use your time if you have it to help with set up and clean up at the event at Everett Middle School between the hours of 4:30 and 7 pm, any bit of time you can helps.

Thank you so much,

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saludos,

Muchas gracias,

Dear SFUSD Families:

In SFUSD, most school-based after school and summer learning programs are co-sponsored by SFUSD (the ExCEL program) and partnering community based organizations. The majority are funded through city, state and federal grants. These grants are often awarded in three to five long cycles and are not guaranteed to be renewed once a grant cycle has ended. Unfortunately, the district has recently learned that it lost $3.3 million in competitive federal grants to support our after school program services to families. Please note, this is not related to federal funding cuts to after school programs but rather due to not being awarded the competitive 21st Century Learning grant.

We understand how important after school and summer learning is and we are committed to preserving after school and summer program services. In order to ensure that services continue, we will be moving more SFUSD funds into subsidizing these services and also implementing a district wide co-payment fee structure for ALL ExCEL elementary/K-8  and middle after school programs. Some programs already have a fee structure in place. The co-payment fee structure will go into effect for school year 2017-2018. In anticipation of the need for a more sustainable funding model, the Board of Education approved the implementation of a co-payment fee structure in 2014 with its resolution titled After School for All.

Each school’s ExCEL after school programs will share more specifics but in general, here are the fee structure guidelines all programs will follow:

The monthly co-payment fee will be waived for a child who is: 1) eligible for free or reduced  lunch except those fees required by a local, state or federal tuition subsidy program; 2) homeless or; 3)  in foster care.

All other children will pay a co-payment fee on a sliding scale from $50-$500/month based on income.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Balloons, excessive flowers, strollers, etc. must be checked into the designated room.  Please follow signs. Please do not bring any of these into the auditorium.

  • If you would like pictures of your child on the stage, you may do so after the ceremony. Please do not approach the stage during the ceremony.

  • We would like to invite everyone to the courtyard for refreshments after the ceremony.

  • Caps and gowns should be returned after the ceremony, look for signs.

  • Students will receive their certificate after the ceremony in the courtyard, look for signs.

SCROLL DOWN FOR SPANISH

April 28, 2017

Dear Students, Families and JLMS Faculty and Staff:

After a great deal of deep thought, we have come to the conclusion that the wisest move is to cancel the upcoming field trip on May 1st to the dance theatre performance and Asian Art Museum.  There are too many obstacles and there are safety issues, and we have decided it is best to cancel.

As fortune would have it, we have been offered a major grant from the production team over at the Curran Theater Organization and our field trip is now rescheduled for Wednesday, May 3rd to see THE ENCOUNTER.  This will only affect 6th graders, but we wanted everyone to know.

Complicite’s THE ENCOUNTER is “one of the most immersive theater pieces ever created” (New York Times.) Directed and performed by Simon McBurney, this solo performance traces a journey into the depths of the Amazon rainforest, using 3D audio technology to build an intimate and shifting world of sound.

Inspired by the book Amazon Beaming by Petru Popescu, THE ENCOUNTER follows National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre as he finds himself lost in a remote area of Brazil in 1969, which leads to a startling encounter that is to change his life. Each seat comes equipped with a pair of headphones. Put them on and experience ground-breaking sound design - plugging into the power of the imagination, and engaging you in new and breathtaking ways as McBurney leads you on an epic journey.

I want to thank the 6th grade team for helping us support the arts at James Lick and this golden opportunity to use "San Francisco as the campus.”

There is no need to sign a new field trip form.  If you initially did not turn in a form because of May 1st protest, you may still submit a form until Tuesday May 2nd if you decide to join us.

If you would like to chaperone this trip, please contact Mr. C at the email below.

Respectfully,

Keith Carames

Theatre Arts, JLMS

28 de abril de 2017

Estimados Estudiantes, Familias y JLMS Facultad y Personal:

Respetuosamente,

What is Summer-Start AYD?

It’s an exciting program that will help you get the skills you need for success in Mathematics. If selected to participate, you will take part in a program encompassing a four-week summer class. You will:

·      Learn to use mathematical clues in forensics science and crime scene investigations.

·      Increase your math skills with new online tools that you can use at school and at home.

·      Learn about what it takes to be a successful learner, even when assignments are hard or you are taking challenging courses.

·      Learn mathematics that will give you a jump start next year.

·      Become part of a learning community that can support you throughout next year.

Dates: June 5 - June 30, 2017

Locations:

Everett - 9am to 12pm

Denman - 9am to 12pm

APG - 8am to 11am

MLK - 9:30am to 12:30pm

Who can participate?

Any student entering eighth grade who can commit to attending the summer class can apply. Pick up an application from your math teacher or counselor (or see the attached application).

Frequently asked questions

·      Why would I give up four weeks of my summer?

This program gives you the opportunity to get to learn skills that can become keys to your success in 8th grade—and beyond.

·      Is this a remedial class?

This class is the opposite of remedial. In this class, you will work with classmates to solve challenging and interesting problems and get a jump start on eighth grade. It is an honor to be selected to participate.

·      What if I don’t really like math?

That’s OK. Our most successful students started out feeling the same. Many students who don’t like math have reported that they liked AYD because the activities didn’t feel like the math they were used to and taught problem solving strategies that apply to many other subjects. Also, you will usually work in pairs or groups. Learning to work as part of a team can lead to success!

·      Is this just a math class?

Though you will spend some time each day involved in mathematical problem solving, this is not a typical math class. In fact, some students report that it doesn’t feel like a math class at all. Instead, this is a class that helps you learn a wide variety of skills that you can use in any class.

Vas a:

Parents of 6th Graders,

We will begin our CAASPP state testing on Monday of next week, 4/24.

Students will test Monday, Tuesday (English Language Arts) and Thursday, Friday (Math). They will be testing with their 1st/2nd period teachers.

Please ensure that your children go to bed early each night, eat a healthy breakfast each morning (breakfast is free in the cafeteria before school), and get to school by 8:25am, so that they can be in class when the bell rings at 8:30.

They will report directly to their first period classes on these testing days (there will be no homeroom for 6th graders Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday).

Thank you for your support in ensuring your children are feeling their best and are able to do their best to show what they have learned this year!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is the statewide assessment system used by California public schools. The CAASPP program is intended to provide informationused to monitor student progress and help them succeed, ensuring that all students leave high school ready for college and career.

CAASPP computer-based tests are based on California Common Core State Standards for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. These assessments include the Smarter Balanced computer adaptive tests in English language arts/literacy and mathematics and the California Alternate Assessment for some students with disabilities.

SFUSD students in grades 3-8 and 11 began participating in CAASPP testing beginning in March 2017 The students of James Lick Middle School will be taking these assessments in late April and early to mid May. In addition, SFUSD students in grades 5, 8, and 10 will take the California Science Test (CAST), a new computer-based science assessment based on Next Generation Science Standards; James Lick eighth grade students will take this test mid April.

To learn about the types of questions on the computer-based test, you and your child can view the practice test online at the California Department of Education (CDE) Smarter Balanced Practice Test Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp.

Following the spring 2017 testing, students receive individual score reports. Student score reports will be mailed to parents in the beginning of school year 2017-18. The detailed reports include an overall score, a description of the student’s achievement level for English language arts and mathematics, science (if a participating grade) and other information. If you would like more information, please visit the Parent/Student tab of the CDE CAASPP Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/.

Parents/Guardians have the right to request an exemption from all or part of CAASPP testing. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation, please contact John Burke (burkej1@sfusd.edu) at the SFUSD Achievement Assessments Office at  (415) 241-6400.

Queridos padres y guardianes,

So close, yet so far away.  From 1910 to 1940, many Angel Island Immigration Station immigrants experienced these feelings upon reaching America, but were detained from entering San Francisco.  On May 7, 2017 (12:00-3:00), the San Francisco Public Library Main Library will celebrate Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month by spotlighting personal immigrant stories from those who went through Angel Island.

Look forward to educational games and craft activities for all ages, a display of Angel Island family histories, books, news articles, and photos. The first 50 children ages 12 and under will receive a goody bag.

Dear James Lick Community,

The MOST IMPORTANT PTSA meeting of this year is coming up on Wednesday, April 12th at 6:00 pm.  This will be the meeting where we need to elect a new PTSA President and Treasurer for the 2017-18 school year.  If no one steps up to fill these legally required roles, the JLMS PTSA will immediately lose non-profit and PTA status.  If there is no PTSA at James Lick in the future our students lose out on so many important opportunities. LET’S NOT LET THIS HAPPEN!

Please consider taking on one of these roles and becoming more active in the JLMS PTSA as your act of resistance and to support our wonderful school during these uncertain times.  We have a strong PTSA Board of current and new parents, and a Vice President (Julie Jackson) and Secretary (Paula Murphy) that have committed for next year.

I’ve attached Nomination forms in English and Spanish to this email.  Please, please, please consider taking on one of these important roles and talking to your other JLMS parent friends about it, as well.  Nomination forms are due by Tuesday, April 11th in the PTSA Mailbox or Safe in the School Office.

Thank you for your support, and hope to see you on April 12th for the PTSA Election! Please contact Osvaldo Ortiz, Parent Liason, at 415-695-5675 or by email: ortizo@sfusd.edu with any questions.

This is what we are about:
We plant seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.
We lay foundations that will need further development.
We provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capabilities.
We cannot do everything
and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that.
This enables us to do something,
and to do it very well.

This is an update for families who submitted applications by January 13, 2017 for an SFUSD school assignment. As you know SFUSD school assignment letters, which were scheduled to be mailed out by March 17, have been delayed. The delay is due to unforeseen staffing emergencies. SFUSD’s computer system is working as designed and there is a dedicated team working 24-7 to get assignments finalized as quickly as possible given these unforeseen staffing issues. Please be assured we are double checking for accuracy every step of the way and aim to get this information to families as soon as possible.

We remain hopeful that letters might be ready by Monday. We are extremely sorry for the delay and will notify you of our progress again tomorrow morning, March 20.

Come one, come all to a brand new musical theatre creation at James Lick Middle School - Just in Case ~ Tales of an Immigrant Life which plays March 9, 10 and 11th at 1220 Noe Street in San Francisco.

This is an original musical revue created by Keith Carames, Jenna Monroe (Artistic Director of San Francisco's Requisite Dance Company) and Jorell Chavez (Music teacher at Burton High School) in collaboration with the students of James Lick Middle School.

The entire musical will center around three different family units, each of whom has a relationship with America.

There is a Latino family who have been planning to come to America forever and suddenly decide, after hearing of the American election and the war in Syria, that traveling is a bad idea and that America is not what they thought it would be, so they decide to not move.

There is a Jewish family whose grandparents came through Ellis Island many years ago who are celebrating a wedding anniversary with their family, recounting what it was like to travel to America and how America has given them the life they had always dreamed of for themselves and their children and grandchildren.

And finally, there is a Syrian family who had no intention of moving, who now – as a result of constant warfare – have become refugees seeking asylum in America but they are not allowed to enter the country.

As the show progresses, many students will have an opportunity to “break the fourth wall” and address the audience, not as their character but rather as themselves, telling the audience the story of their own family’s immigration to America.

The show will feature songs from musicals in the American Musical Theatre Repertoire.

We hope to see you there.

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has a policy in place that explicitly prohibits gender-based discrimination, a protection that extends to everyone, including transgender and gender expansive students.

We are proud that we were the first school district in the country to pass a policy extending safeguards to our transgender student body. We will continue to honor those policies and ensure that transgender and gender nonconforming students in the SFUSD will remain protected from discrimination, bullying and harassment.

Students, know that in California public schools, you have the right to be...

  • Free from bullying, harassment and discrimination
  • Respected when you dress and express yourself in ways that do not conform to gender stereotypes, with respect to the student dress codes
  • Affirmed by adults when you declare your pronoun and name that fits your gender identity
  • Involved in school activities, access spaces such as locker rooms and restrooms, that fits your gender identity

Our book this year will be 60 pages, including the custom pages you can create with your own pictures and printed fully in color. The price will it will $29 before the March 15th deadline.

In order to buy your book and start your custom pages, visit www.treering.com. Customizing your yearbook is up to the purchaser.  The directions are on the website on how to upload your photos.

If you purchased a book last year, you can log into the same account. If you didn’t you’ll want to have our school passcode handy so that you can create your account quickly.

Calling all youth advocates and community organizers!

2017-2018 San Francisco Youth Commission Applications Now Open Until April 21

We are happy to announce that applications are now open for the 2017-2018 Youth Commission term. Do you know a youth who is interested in local government or in identifying the needs of young people in order to provide input on city legislation? The Youth Commission is the perfect place for them to grow their skills and abilities as policy advocates!

The San Francisco Youth Commission is a body of 17 San Franciscans between the ages of 12 and 23. Created by the voters under a 1995 amendment to the City Charter, the commission is responsible for advising the Board of Supervisors and Mayor on policies affecting young people. To see a list of current youth commission priorities like lowering the voting age to 16, promoting free MUNI for youth, and improving youth-police relations, please visit our site at: www.sfgov.org/yc

We are asking for support getting word out about this opportunity to as many young leaders in San Francisco as possible! We want youth to know that they can have a say in what goes on in city hall and make a change in their communities! We have included here a copy of our application.

Link to digital application: http://sfgov.org/youthcommission/file/1106

Link to application on google form: http://tinyurl.com/ycapp2017

The deadline is April 21st for hard copies of April 23rd for electronic copies.

We are excited to share that the district is transitioning from School Loop to Synergy’s Gradebook Family and Student Portals in August 2017. This transition to Synergy will provide SFUSD’s students, families, teachers, and district staff with a unified system for real-time information on classes, grades, assignments, and more. While we know change can be challenging, we firmly believe the transition to Synergy Gradebook will increase efficiency for teachers and improve access for our students and families.

What does this mean for students and families?
Starting in August 2017, students and families will log in to Synergy’s Family and Student Portals to access student information related to attendance, assignments and grading. Our transition to Synergy is a response to feedback we have heard from school communities about the need to streamline the number of online systems we use for school-family communications.  Our team will be reaching out to families via parent groups and advisory councils, email, School Messenger, school websites, and School Loop to inform them of the change and provide opportunities to learn more and prepare for the transition in August 2017.

Why are we making this change?

  • One login for attendance and grades for teachers and district staff
  • One login per family, regardless of the number of children and which school they attend
  • Greater clarification and standardization of SFUSD grading practices and policies
  • Increased security and confidentiality of student and parent information
  • Actionable real-time student performance information
  • Improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities
  • Improved translation options

What will happen with School Loop?
School Loop will continue to be used for school websites next year. However, teachers, students and families will use Synergy instead of School Loop for other communications and  information about grades and assignments.

We are confident that Synergy Gradebook is another exciting step to leverage technology to increase engagement in our school communities, enhance data integrity and security, and better position us for 21st century learning, as outlined in Vision 2025 and our Digital District Plan.

To learn more, check out the exciting G4A Launch Video, go to the Gradebook for All website (www.sfusd.edu/gradebook), or download the attached flier.

How do we have a conversation about race with our children?

In the wake of the presidential election results, uprisings and protests in Ferguson, NYC, Baltimore, Oakland and South Dakota, many of us are imagining that another world is possible. We know that the potential for a world in which unarmed Black Americans are not killed regularly by police and people of color are not the targets of systemic racism and hate crimes has to start with us. In fact, the most powerful change we can make is on the micro level, with what we teach our children about race and implicit bias.

This introductory workshop will help us unpack our own understanding of race and outline developmentally supportive language to use with kids.

Addresses will only be used for grant purposes. If you have concerns about entering your information then please call 415-981-1960 to register over the phone.

Parents and caregivers of youth of all ages and racial and ethnic backgrounds welcome.

Join Our Family Coalition, San Francisco Public Library, and San Francisco Unified School District for this very important discussion about race.
Light refreshments will be served.

Greetings JLMS families,

The musical that we have been waiting for is almost here! Just in Case – Tales of an Immigrant Life:   An original musical revue created by and for the students of James Lick Middle School.

Location: James Lick Middle School Auditorium

                             Thursday, March 9  at 7:00pm

                                   Friday, March 10 at 7:00pm

                               Saturday March 11  at 3:00pm & 7:00pm

The entire musical will center around three different family units, each of whom has a relationship with America.  There is a Latino family who has been planning to come to America forever and suddenly decide, after hearing the results of the American election and the war in Syria, that traveling is a bad idea and that America is not what they thought it would be.

Tickets will be a suggested donation from $10 to $15 per ticket. (Under 18 are free)

Estimado Padre / Tutor:

Dear Parent/Guardian:

In anticipation of your 6th grade student’s promotion to 7th grade, California law AB 354 requires that all incoming 7th graders show evidence of Tdap vaccination before the first day of the next school year.

We ask ALL 6th graders to have their vaccinations up to date by April 15, 2017.

Listed at the top of the page are additional vaccines that the district is lacking evidence for. It is suggested to obtain these vaccines as well while at the doctor’s office.

If you have submitted your child’s vaccination record and have received this notice, it means that there is NOT evidence of Tdap vaccination on record. We suggest that you check with your child’s health care provider immediately.

Students without proof of Tdap will not be allowed to be in school. Please provide the school with a record of Tdap vaccination immediately to avoid the loss of school days.

If you have any questions, please contact Alex Teekell, School District Nurse, or Osvaldo Ortiz, Family Liaison.

Good Morning to our JLMS Families,

I want to share this important information about an upcoming annual family survey that we will be conducting.

SFUSD has a new way of rating school quality, and your opinions will be a part of that system!  Starting February 13th, we will be asking you to fill out a short survey about the school.  This survey is very important to helping us understand how we can improve the school, so please be sure you fill one out before May 12!  We want to hear every family’s voice!

The family survey (formerly the Satisfaction Survey) is part of the School Quality Improvement Index and is one way we are measuring the Culture and Climate of our school.
The family survey is part of our District’s new accountability system to the federal government. The family survey is one important way to help us understand how families feel about our school and their child’s learning, and how our school can improve.
It is very important that we get as many of our families to respond as possible so that we have data that truly represents the whole school and not just a few people. Everyone’s voice is important!
There are no right or wrong answers to any of these question.  We just want to know everyone’s honest opinion.

The survey is available online as well as in paper version and is translated into Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Arabic.  We will send you the website link for our school-specific survey. The survey will not be used in staff or teacher evaluations. This survey will be anonymous.  We will track who has completed the survey, but we will not know what any individual says on any question.
