Dear parents and guardians,

Family Portal debuted in Fall 2017, and since this is a new tool, we want to hear from you about your experience with Family Portal as a parent or guardian. We’ve worked with Parents for Public Schools of SF to develop a survey, and the information we collect will help us as we continually work to improve your Family Portal experience.

Please fill out this short survey, available in English, Chinese and Spanish, before June 8 to give us feedback!

*****Of course, we are always open to having 6th- grade parents come and assist with donations or volunteering.

Dear Families-

Every spring the school district asks students, families and faculty to take part in a Culture and Climate Survey as part of the district’s accountability system to families.

The family Culture-Climate survey is one important way to help us understand how families feel about our school and their child’s learning, and how our school can improve. It is very important that we get as many of our families to respond as possible so that we have data that truly represents all family’s experiences and not just a few. Everyone’s voice is important! There are no right or wrong answers to any of these questions. We just want to know everyone’s honest opinion.

Please be aware that:

  • The survey will not be used in staff or teacher evaluations.
  • This survey will be anonymous. We will track how many families have completed the survey, but we will not know what any individual says on any question.
  • Parents with multiple children in this school should fill out one survey for each child. If you have children in another school, you should fill out a survey at that school as well.

The survey is available online and is translated into Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and

Arabic. Here is the link to our school-specific survey: http://bit.ly/2EkOW9M and we are asking families to fill out the online surveys from the February 12th through April 27th.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Queridas familias,

8th Grade World Language Placement Assessment

A requirement for high school graduation includes 20 credits of World Language, which equals two years or four semesters of study. Three years of world language study are recommended by most 4-year colleges (UC/CSU). If your child already speaks and can read some Spanish, he or she will have the opportunity to take a placement test this winter (test administration window 1/29/2018 to 2/2/2018.) The results of this assessment determines the correct placement into a high school world language class. Taking advanced language classes is a great way to help your child get into college and to earn the Seal of Biliteracy award on his or her high school diploma. As well, your child may be able to earn college credit in high school for taking an AP course or an advanced world language class at CCSF.  Please contact your child’s 8th grade counselor for more information.

Greetings JLMS Community:

The Noe Valley Farmers Market has provided the JLMS Advanced Band with a new performance opportunity on Saturday, November 4th. This date has been provided as a postponement of October 14th, which was cancelled due to poor air quality.

Drum and bass line students will need to report to the band room at 10:20am, so they can set up the back-line equipment before the act that goes on before the JLMS Band. Wind players will need to report to the band room at 11:30am, and then the entire group will proceed to the venue.

The stage is within the NVFM lot at 3861 24th street. The band will perform toward the back of the lot under the newly remodeled gazebo.

Parent volunteers will be needed to help with the event, so if you are interested please let me know.

San Francisco Unified School District officials are working closely with the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Public Health to monitor the air quality situation in San Francisco. At this time, we continue to advise schools to conduct indoor activities during the school day. Schools will be open Friday, Oct. 13. If San Francisco's air quality is downgraded further, we will consult with Department of Public Health and provide families and staff with an update.

San Francisco has very poor air quality due to the fires in the North Bay. SFUSD has advised all school sites to keep students indoors on Oct. 12 during recess, physical education and lunch. All outdoor sports and learning activities should also be moved indoors.

These guidelines are to remain in place until the San Francisco Department of Public Health deems the air quality has improved and it is safe for children to do activities outdoors. We will continue to update principals regarding any changes.

Beginning at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 11, the air quality in San Francisco is expected to become "unhealthy for sensitive groups" (known as a code orange). At that time, schools have been advised to minimize outdoor exertion for students and staff with asthma or other health issues. Alternative activities and settings will be made available for all students at all of our schools.

To date, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrant youth have been granted DACA status, which provides work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. The program has enabled our graduates to contribute to their communities by significantly increasing opportunities for higher education and jobs. Unfortunately, on September 5, 2017, President Trump directed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to phase out and eventually end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) over two and half years. USCIS will continue to accept and process RENEWAL applications until Oct. 5, 2017 from applicants whose DACA expires between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018. Below are resources in support of DACA students who are eligible for renewal:

Dress/Appearance Standards Students shall dress appropriately for daily attendance at school. Students who attend schools which have a uniform policy are expected to be in uniform every day. If special circumstances in adhering to this policy should arise, please contact the individual school’s principal for assistance. The type and style of clothing (except for schools with uniforms) and hairdo are individual and personal. Dear SFUSD Families:

In SFUSD, most school-based after school and summer learning programs are co-sponsored by SFUSD (the ExCEL program) and partnering community based organizations. The majority are funded through city, state and federal grants. These grants are often awarded in three to five long cycles and are not guaranteed to be renewed once a grant cycle has ended. Unfortunately, the district has recently learned that it lost $3.3 million in competitive federal grants to support our after school program services to families. Please note, this is not related to federal funding cuts to after school programs but rather due to not being awarded the competitive 21st Century Learning grant.

We understand how important after school and summer learning is and we are committed to preserving after school and summer program services. In order to ensure that services continue, we will be moving more SFUSD funds into subsidizing these services and also implementing a district wide co-payment fee structure for ALL ExCEL elementary/K-8  and middle after school programs. Some programs already have a fee structure in place. The co-payment fee structure will go into effect for school year 2017-2018. In anticipation of the need for a more sustainable funding model, the Board of Education approved the implementation of a co-payment fee structure in 2014 with its resolution titled After School for All.

Each school’s ExCEL after school programs will share more specifics but in general, here are the fee structure guidelines all programs will follow:

The monthly co-payment fee will be waived for a child who is: 1) eligible for free or reduced  lunch except those fees required by a local, state or federal tuition subsidy program; 2) homeless or; 3)  in foster care.

All other children will pay a co-payment fee on a sliding scale from $50-$500/month based on income.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
