Dear James Lick Families:

James Lick Middle School is holding elections for school committees, which must be completed before September 26, 2018. We invite you to nominate yourself or others for the following:

  • School Site Council (SSC)
  • English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC)

A School Site Council (SSC) must be established at all San Francisco Unified School District public schools. The elected members represent parents, students, community members, and school staff in school governance. The SSC is responsible for the development of the Academic Plan, and overall school site budget including any categorical funds. The SSC is expected to:

  • Review the SFUSD Strategic Plan: Beyond the Talk.
  • Review and analyze student data.
  • Solicit community input and develop a needs assessment.
  • Assist the principal in developing the BSC/SPSA and school site budget.
  • Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the BSC/SPSA on an ongoing basis.
  • Approve the Academic Plan and school site budget before it is submitted to the District for final review and approval.

Attached to this message is the nomination form for parents that are interested in being involved in the SSC.

The purpose of the English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC) is to advise the principal, SSC and school staff on programs and services for English Learners. The tasks are similar to the SSC’s (stated above) and also include: the annual language census and ways to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance.

The school council and committees are needed to support all school programs. You are invited to become a candidate for membership on the council and/or any or all of the committees of your choice. The school & district are responsible for providing you with the information and training you need to be an effective member.

Generally, the groups meet once a month for two hours. Each member is elected for either a one or two-year term. Family members often offer insights into how effective our school is in creating a positive learning environment and how well their children understand their assignments. Perspectives and parent participation/involvement are important to our school. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Principal Tim Reidy or Osvaldo Ortiz, the Family Liaison at 415- 695-5675

Greetings,

I hope you are all well. I am sending this message to the 6th and 7th-grade families. We are getting ready for the 8th-grade Graduation Ceremony on June 4th. The graduation ceremony will be held at Everett Middle School from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

*****Of course, we are always open to having 6th- grade parents come and assist with donations or volunteering.

We want to make sure that we can have our 8th-grade parents and guardians enjoy this important moment as they watch their students walk on stage as they graduate from James Lick Middle School.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mr. Ortiz, the Family Liaison at 415-695-5675 or by E-mail at ortizo@sfusd.edu

Dear Families-

Every spring the school district asks students, families and faculty to take part in a Culture and Climate Survey as part of the district’s accountability system to families.

The family Culture-Climate survey is one important way to help us understand how families feel about our school and their child’s learning, and how our school can improve. It is very important that we get as many of our families to respond as possible so that we have data that truly represents all family’s experiences and not just a few. Everyone’s voice is important! There are no right or wrong answers to any of these questions. We just want to know everyone’s honest opinion.

Please be aware that:

  • The survey will not be used in staff or teacher evaluations.
  • This survey will be anonymous. We will track how many families have completed the survey, but we will not know what any individual says on any question.
  • Parents with multiple children in this school should fill out one survey for each child. If you have children in another school, you should fill out a survey at that school as well.

The survey is available online and is translated into Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and

Arabic. Here is the link to our school-specific survey: http://bit.ly/2EkOW9M and we are asking families to fill out the online surveys from the February 12th through April 27th.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Queridas familias,

8th Grade World Language Placement Assessment

A requirement for high school graduation includes 20 credits of World Language, which equals two years or four semesters of study. Three years of world language study are recommended by most 4-year colleges (UC/CSU). If your child already speaks and can read some Spanish, he or she will have the opportunity to take a placement test this winter (test administration window 1/29/2018 to 2/2/2018.) The results of this assessment determines the correct placement into a high school world language class. Taking advanced language classes is a great way to help your child get into college and to earn the Seal of Biliteracy award on his or her high school diploma. As well, your child may be able to earn college credit in high school for taking an AP course or an advanced world language class at CCSF.  Please contact your child’s 8th grade counselor for more information.
